Does your child complain that the work they do at school is too easy, and it’s boring?
How do I know if my child is gifted?
Gifted and talented children have demonstrated abilities that are significantly advanced compared to other children of the same age. Children may be gifted in one or more domains. They may demonstrate advanced abilities in mathematics, for example, while performing like their same age peers in other subjects. While characteristics of giftedness can vary greatly between children, parents often notice an advanced vocabulary, heightened sensitivity, remarkable memory, and rapid learning in their child. Gifted and talented children are constantly learning from their environment, seeming to know things without the effort required to learn it. Some gifted and talented children have the potential to perform at remarkably high levels but might not yet be demonstrating it.
Why is a formal assessment important?
Gifted and talented children need appropriate support and opportunities to develop their potential. A comprehensive, individual intelligence test together with an academic performance test, is useful for understanding aspects of a child’s development and can help in figuring out your child’s needs. Identifying your child's specific cognitive abilities and unique learning profile is important for giftedness and high potential to be recognised, valued, and nurtured. "Tests" are all done in a child friendly and engaging way, using a range of puzzles, block games, pencil and paper quizzes, questions, and challenges using an ipad.
What does an assessment provide?
An assessment from an educational psychologist can help identify if your child is achieving their full potential. Educational testing will identify the level of giftedness and can provide the needed diagnostic documentation that is required for eligibility for extension and enrichment opportunities at school, or entry into gifted programs. An IQ test, which is useful in identifying intellectual giftedness, can also identify particular areas of strength or weakness. An understanding of each child's specific abilities and needs can allow schools to provide an appropriately engaging, challenging and rewarding education for your child.
All assessements include an individual, user-friendly report, with practical recommendations for school and home. A clear statement documenting the presence of giftedness or high ability is provided. Gifted children require a variety of experiences, opportunities, and resources to challenge them to discover and develop their advanced abilities. Specific recommendations are provided to assist the school and parents in the development of an individual student learning plan.
A parent feedback session is provided, to discuss your child's results and recommendations.
Many gifted children have advanced verbal ability and a great love of language.
